Meet Elijah Robinson and Kebari Payton, who are some the best of the young musical artists coming out of the birthplace of jazz

Introduces our readers to guitarist Elijah Robinson and saxophone player Kebari Payton
Coffee Time News's Mariana Lopes and Yuri Sundermeyer got to spend an afternoon listening to the NOJO Youth Orchestra perform along with interviewing two of its key members: Elijah Robinson and Kebari Payton. Not only did they meet two wonderfully talented musicians, but also two classy young men ready to make a difference in the jazz world with their passion for a music loved around the world, especially in Ascona, Switzerland during the Jazz Ascona festival which has been an annual event there for the last forty years.

Yuri Sundermeyer: Please tell me about New Orleans and what it means to you?
Elijah Robinson: When I think about New Orleans, I think it’s a really lively and vibrant place. I think there’s music on every corner. You walk down the street… if you take a right or a left turn, there’s going to be a band playing. There’ll always be music and somebody will be playing music, so it’s a fun and lively city. If you want to go there to have fun and a good time, New Orleans is the place to be. It really is.
Kebari Payton: It’s mostly the food I think about, because it has some of the best food I have ever tasted. I’m getting off track though, but let me say my favorite dish is crawfish pie. Also, like Elijah said, the music is amazing. The jazz is a very important part of New Orleans. When I first heard it, I knew I had to play it.
Yuri Sundermeyer: Por favor, falem-me sobre Nova Orleães e o que significa para vocês?
Elijah Robinson: Quando eu penso sobre Nova Orleães, eu penso que é um local bastante vibrante e cheio de vida. Eu penso que há música em todas as esquinas. Se tu andas ao longo da rua, não importa se viras à direita ou à esquerda, vai haver sempre uma banda a tocar. Vai haver sempre música e alguém a tocar, então é uma cidade divertida e com muita vida. Se quiseres ir lá para te divertires e passar uns bons tempos, Nova Orleães é o lugar para o fazer, realmente é.
Kebari Payton: Eu acho que é principalmente a comida, porque tem a melhor comida que alguma vez provei. Estou a sair do tema da conversa, mas deixa-me dizer que o meu prato favorito é um tipo da torta de lagosta. Também tal como o Elijah disse, a música é incrível. O jazz é uma parte muito importante de Nova Orleães. Quando eu ouvi jazz pela a primeira vez, eu soube que tinha de tocar.
Mariana Lopes: What are your first impressions of Europe? What have you liked the best?
Elijah Robinson: My first impression is the peace and quiet. There’s not too many cars and you can just walk around. I really like how small the streets are. You just walk through the streets and there’s a store here and a store there and you can pretty much find whatever you want on any street around here and it’s really beautiful. There’s so much nature, but what I like particularly about this place is the mountains and how you can see them in the background. It’s just beautiful.
Kebari Payton: It has to be the peace and quiet. Since I’m from Louisiana, I never see many mountains. The food here is not as spicy as New Orleans, but it’s still amazing food. It’s all so peaceful here. I want to come back here for vacation.
Mariana Lopes: Quais são as vossas primeiras impressões da Europa? O que gostaram mais?
Elijah Robinson: A minha primeira impressão é a paz e o sossego. Não exitem muitos carros e consegues apenas andar por aí. Eu gosto quão pequenas as ruas são. Podes andar por eles e está uma loja aqui e uma ali, e podes facilmente encontrar o que precisares em qualquer rua por aqui e é mesmo linda. Existe tanta natureza aqui, mas o que eu gosto especificamente sobre este sitio são as montanhas e como podes vê-las no horizonte. É mesmo lindo.
Kebari Payton: Tem de ser a paz e sossego. Já que sou de Louisiana, eu nunca vejo muitas montanhas. A comida daqui não é tão picante como a de Nova Orleães, mas ainda é comida fenomenal. Tudo é tão pacífico aqui. Eu quero voltar aqui durante as minhas férias.
Yuri Sundermeyer: What music is at the top of your playlist?
Elijah Robinson: I’d say I listen to a lot of R&B, like a lot of R&B and funk. I love those two genres. I like to blend those two genres when I make my own music. I like to record my own songs and I blend R&B, funk and jazz all together and try to make something new.
Kebari Payton: Me, I mainly listen to John Coltrane. He is a very popular saxophonist. I kind of like his style of music. I listen to a lot of his songs like “My Favourite Things”. I listen to that all the time. If not John Coltrane, I also listen to a little bit of Charlie Parker.
Elijah Robinson: I’ve recently been listening to a lot of older kinds of R&B songs and stuff like that because there is a lot of ambient kind of sounds that go in the background and I really like how peaceful and vibish it can get. It’s a lot of vibes and it is really nice.
Yuri Sundermeyer: Que música está no topo da vossa playlist?
Elijah Robinson: Eu diria que oiço muito R&B e funk. Eu adoro estes dois géneros. Eu gosto de misturar estes dois estilos musicais quando crio a minha própria música. Eu gosto de gravar as minhas próprias canções e eu combino R&B, funk e jazz para tentar criar algo novo.
Kebari Payton: Eu principalmente oiço o John Coltrane. Ele é um saxofonista bastante popular. Eu até que gosto do seu estilo musical. Eu oiço muitas das suas canções como “My Favorite Things” e oiço isto a toda hora. Se não é o John Coltrane, eu também oiço um bocado de Charlie Parker.
Elijah Robinson: Eu tenho andado a ouvir tipos de canções R&B mais antigos e coisas assim porque existem bastantes sons ambientais no fundo e eu gosto muito quão pacífico e atmosférico pode ficar. São imensas energias positivas e é mesmo bom.
Mariana Lopes: How much time do you put into practicing? Tell me about your routine.
Elijah Robinson: Well, usually I practice for hours and hours and hours, like probably five hours every time. I start practicing and I get lost in it and practice nonstop, so it will go from maybe 1 pm to probably 7pm just practicing and playing whatever I hear and playing along with songs that I like and stuff, so I don’t really have a routine. I just like to practice whatever I want to practice in the moment and just go along with that like, whatever I’m feeling. I go along with the feeling.
Kebari Parker: I practice around three hours. On some days I kind of start off with long tones, just to help me better with my tones. Then, I go on to scales and then try to learn a bunch of licks from famous artists and from R&B songs, because learning those will really get the audience captivated when they recognize a lick that I play and after that I finish off trying to learn as many stanzas as I can.
Mariana Lopes: Quanto tempo dedicam à prática da música? Falem-me sobre a vossa rotina?
Elijah Robinson: Bem, normalmente eu pratico horas sem fim, provavelmente cinco horas de cada vez. Eu quando começo a praticar, acabo por ficar imerso nessa experiência e, assim começo das 13 horas e provavelmente termino por volta das 19 horas, praticando, tocando o que estiver a ouvir e acompanhando canções que eu gosto e, tudo isso, não tem uma rotina concreta. Eu gosto apenas de praticar o que quiser praticar no momento. Gosto de seguir os meus sentimentos.
Kebari Parker: Eu tendo a praticar três horas por dia. Certos dias eu começo com tons mais longos para me ajudar a melhorar os meus tons. Após isso, pratico escalas e tento aprender imensos licks de artistas famosos e canções de R&B, porque aprendê-los irá cativar o publico quando eles reconhecem um lick que eu toque e, finalmente tento aprender tantas stanzas quanto eu poder.
Yuri Sundermeyer: What’s the best thing a teacher has taught you?
Elijah Robinson: The best thing a teacher taught me is kind of like never to be afraid whenever you’re performing because I used to have a teacher, his name is Mr. Hawkins, and I used to play trombone in a marching band and I used to be a really nervous kid. He taught me how not to be afraid to play out and let myself be heard. Yeah, I really appreciate Mr. Hawkins for really pushing me and there and giving me the drive to be a musician.
Kebari Payton: I had a teacher, he was a piano player. His name was Mr. Harris. I had him when I was starting out. He taught me to trust myself, because I tend to think I’m playing the wrong thing, but I end up playing the right thing and he really taught me how to be more confident. Sully, too. He has helped me out a lot too with my playing.
Elijah Robinson: Sully is great. Sully is amazing. Sully really encourages us every time we practice. Sully really pushes us to and gives us confidence and tells us what we do right and what we do wrong. He doesn’t really tell use what to do. He lets us decide what we want to do, but he gives us pointers and gives us tips and guidance along the way. He’s really cool.
Yuri Sundermeyer: Qual a melhor coisa que um professor já vos ensinou?
Elijah Robinson: A melhor coisa que um professor me ensinou é nunca ter medo quando se atua, porque eu tinha um professor, cujo nome era Sr. Hawkins, e costumava tocar trombone numa banda, e era mesmo uma criança nervosa. Ele ensinou-me a não ter medo de tocar e fazê-lo de forma a ser ouvido. Sim, eu realmente aprecio muito o Sr. Hawkins por me estimular e motivar para me tornar músico.
Kebari Payton: Eu tive um professor que era pianista. O nome dele era Sr. Harris. Eu tive-o quando estava a começar. Ele ensinou-me a confiar em mim próprio, porque ás vezes eu penso que estou a tocar a coisa errada, mas acabo por acertar e ele, realmente, ajudou-me a ser mais confiante. O Sully, também me ajudou muito a tocar.
Elijah Robinson: O Sully é muito bom. O Sully é incrivel. O Sully encoraja-nos todas as vezes que nós praticamos. O Sully impulsiona-nos e dá-nos confiança. Ele diz-nos o que estamos a fazer errado e o que estamos a fazer certo. Ele não nos diz exatamente o que é para fazer. Ele deixa-nos decidir o que nós queremos fazer, mas ele dá-nos indicações, dicas e orientação quanto ao caminho. Ele é mesmo fixe.
Mariana Lopes: If an established artist listened to you, who would you want it to be?
Elijah Robinson: That’s a hard one, because there’s a lot of musicians I really like, but if I really had to choose who I wanted to hear me, it would be either Jimi Hendrix or Wes Montgomery. Those two guys are really good. I would want them to hear me as well as get pointers and tips from them.
Kebari Payton: For me, I would want Harry Carney to see how we play “Sophisticated Lady”, because we kind of made our own little version of it. It’s like an R&B version of it. I want to see what he would think of it. It’s one of my favorite songs made by him.
Mariana Lopes: Que músico profissional gostariam que vos ouvissem?
Elijah Robinson: Essa pergunta é difícil, porque há tantos músicos que eu gosto muito, mas se eu tivesse mesmo de escolher quem eu queria que me ouvisse, seria o Jimi Hendrix ou o Wes Montgomery. Esses dois músicos são muito bons. Eu gostaria que me ouvissem e me dessem dicas.
Kebari Payton: Para mim, eu gostaria que fosse o Harry Carney para ver como nós tocamos “Sophisticated Lady”, porque nós criámos mais ou menos a nossa própria versão… uma versão R&B e gostaira de saber o que ele acharia. É uma das minhas músicas favoritas.

Mariana Lopes: Who would you want to be hired by? Who would you want to start your career playing with?
Elijah Robinson: There’s a band that I really like a lot…it’s a funk band called Lettuce. They’re so funky. Every single song they have is just up there and I would really love to play guitar for them because that would be nice.
Kebari Payton: I don’t listen to a lot of bands, but Duke Ellington is the main one I do listen to since I started here, so I’d really want to be hired by him if he was still alive. He has a lot of good songs.
Mariana Lopes: Por quem é que gostariam de ser contratados? Com quem gostaria de começar a sua carreira?
Elijah Robinson: Há uma banda que eu gosto muito… é uma banda funk chamada Lettuce. São muito originais. Todas as músicas que têm estão no top e, eu adoraria tocar guitarra para eles, seria fixe.
Kebari Payton: Eu não ouço muitas bandas, mas a banda de Duke Ellington é a que eu mais ouço, desde que comecei a tocar música a sério, por isso gostaria de ser contratado por eles, se fossem vivos. Ele tem canções muito boas.
Yuri Sundermeyer: Are you 100% committed to becoming a professional musician? Do you have a plan B?
Elijah Robinson: Actually, I’m 200% committed, because I would do anything to keep this going. I love being a musician. I love playing music. I love travelling. So, yeah, I would say I’m committed. For a plan B, I would think, maybe, cooking or carpentry, something simple, something small, something to keep my hands working.
Kebari Payton: Yeah, I’m 100% committed, to be honest, I really plan to go far with this. I hope to go forward with this. If this turns out not to be my career that was intended for me, I guess I would go into 3D animating or something like that and try to do that for movies. I used to draw a lot when I was a kid.
Yuri Sundermeyer: Estão 100% empenhados em ser músicos profissionais? Têm, também, um plano B?
Elijah Robinson: Na verdade, estou empenhado 200%, porque eu faria qualquer coisa para continuar. Eu adoro ser músico, adoro tocar música, adoro viajar. Então, sim, eu diria que estou comprometido com a música. Para um plano B, eu pensaria, talvez, em cozinhar ou em carpintaria, algo simples, algo pequeno, algo para deixar as minha mãos ocupadas.
Kebari Payton: Sim, estou 100% empenhado, para ser honesto, eu realmente planeio avançar com a minha carreira. Para além disto, se a carreira de músico não estiver destinada para mim, eu acho que poderia-me tornar um animador 3D ou algo assim e fazer filmes. Eu costumava desenhar muito quando era criança.
