I had the privilege of interviewing Seattle's long-lived band Sky Cries Mary with some of my colleagues. During the three-hour interview, we had an interesting moment when we told Bennett Ireland and Debra Reese that our favorite release by them was Thieves and Sirens. Mr. Ireland was surprised since he said the band put little effort in promoting that particular release. We talked a bit more and later Ms. Reese asked if I could review all their music and provide my teenager feedback on their catalog. This has led us here, to this review which I did with my beloved colleague, Ana Teresa Santos. We reviewed each one of Sky Cries Mary releases and picked the song which we felt was the most appealing for teenagers off each album. The releases are in the order of our preferences and we give our opinion of our favorite song off each album.

Eu tive o privilégio de entrevistar a banda Sky Cries Mary de Seattle que já existe há mais de 35 anos com alguns colegas. Durante uma entrevista de três horas, contámos numa parte da entrevista a Bennett Ireland e a Debra Reese que o nosso lançamento favorito deles era Thieves and Sirens. O Sr. Ireland ficou surpreendido porque, segundo ele, a banda fez pouco esforço para promover aquele lançamento em particular. Conversamos um pouco mais e, mais tarde, a Sra. Both Ana Teresa and I agreed that if young, new listeners wanted to really appreciate Sky Cries Mary, they should start with their live album titled Taking the Stage Live. This album truly captures the magic of Sky Cries Mary and show why they have cultivated such loyal fans who have followed their journey for over thirty years. The quality of this live album is top-notch with numerous songs highlighting the power they brought to the stage. My personal favorite is "Wallawalla/Moving Like Water" which falls right into their specialty of psychedelic music. Ana Teresa loved Don't Forget the Sky which is an addictive track, but sincerely, a listener can't go wrong with any song off this live album which is one of the best things I have ever listened to. If you enjoy this album, then you are off to a good start and can continue with the following studio albums.

Tanto a Ana Teresa quanto eu concordamos que se os jovens ouvintes realmente quisessem apreciar Sky Cries Mary, eles deveriam começar com o seu álbum ao vivo intitulado Taking the Stage Live. Este álbum realmente captura a magia do Sky Cries Mary e mostra o porquê deles cultivarem fãs tão leais que acompanharam a sua jornada por mais de trinta anos. We enjoyed the Taking the Stage release so much that we rolled right into another live album called Here and Now, which was recorded live in 2005. It is just as good as the Taking the Stage release with many worthy tracks. What really caught our attention was "When The Fear Stops", "Nowhere", "Ocean" and "Want". All these are great examples of Sky Cries Mary’s work, but we picked "Elephant Song" as the song we would like our readers to listen to first. It seems to be a band favorite and the live version brings a special life to Roderick Wolgamott’s spoken word storytelling, which guides us into the instrumentals and female vocals. These three elements all combine to create a special song that is best listened to live.

Nós gostamos tanto do lançamento de Taking the Stage que começamos com outro álbum ao vivo chamado Here and Now, que foi gravado em 2005. É tão bom quanto Taking the Stage, com muitas faíscas dignas. We found a lesser-known song which we thought was one of their most radio-friendly. It is called "You Are" and comes off their release Small Town. Neither the song nor the album seem to be that notable within the Sky Cries Mary catalog, but for people who have never heard of Sky Cries Mary and might find their music too different from what they are used to listening, we would suggest digging deep and giving this song a listen. As we said, this song seems ready to be played on our radio stations, but it doesn’t seem like radio ever gave it much of a chance, but this doesn’t mean you shouldn’t give it a chance. Like so many of their songs, the last minute turns epic and makes the song another addictive release which you will put on your playlist for repeated listening.

On A Return To The Inner Experience, we found a rather simple four-minute song to have touched us the most. It is called "When the Fear Stops" and it starts innocently enough with a lazy keyboard part that is followed up by the drummer playing his cymbals softly. The duet starts and a song that starts so softly ends with such frenetic energy as the two singers desperately sing lyrics which could easily be a lovely, yet sad poem. This song shows us the band’s great writing as it ends… “just like the morning sun / your silence burns my skin / just to hear you speak girl / just to see your face / It pains me so to know girl / I'm falling from your grace / Looking for a sunset / something to rely on / Looking for a shoulder / something to cry on / crying in water / how large the tear drops / looking for the moment when the fear stops.
If you like these lyrics, you should hear how Sky Cries Mary sings them as they perform this brilliant song.

Em A Return to the Inner Experience, encontramos uma música muito simples de quatro minutos que mais nos tocou. Chama-se "When The Fear Stops" e começa inocentemente com uma parte preguiçosa do teclado que é seguida pelo baterista a tocar suavemente os pratos. O dueto começa tão suavemente e termina com tanta energia frenética quando os dois cantores cantam desesperadamente letras que facilmente poderiam ser um poema bonito, mas triste. This Timeless Turning is a strong release for the band and many of the songs seem made for radio, but our favorite is a slow instrumental piece that seems like it was made more for meditation than your car radio. Now, don’t be scared off when I say it is meditative music, because it could also be driving music as you explore some beautiful unknown countryside or it could be the music you play as it rains outside and you would rather stay in bed… or it could be the song you play as you think about someone you miss or something that is missing from your life. The song is called "Walk of Nothingness" and after having listened to it once, I find myself returning to it to be hypnotized all over again.

Moon Bathing on Sleeping Leaves is another nice release in Sky Cries Mary’s large catalog. It features nice rhythms with such songs as "Ringing" and "An Ant, the Stars, an Owl and Its Prey", which fit the sound that Sky Cries Mary seems to enjoy playing the most. We also enjoyed listening to these songs, but found "Nowhere" to be our favorite in this offering of fourteen songs. It features spoken word lyrics with Anisa Romero’s angelic voice that builds up to moments when Roderick Wolgamott is yelling out: We got nowhere to go / We got nowhere to go and I end up responding, “I don’t need to go anywhere if I am listening to some good Sky Cries Mary music.” We also noticed Michael Cozzi’s excellent contributions on guitar, which was a nice addition to Sky Cries Mary great assembly of formidable musicians.

Moon Bathing on Sleeping Leaves é outro bom lançamento no grande catálogo de Sky Cries Mary. Possui ótimos ritmos com músicas como "Ringing" e "An Ant, the Stars, an Owl and Its Prey", que se encaixam no tipo de música que a banda mais gosta de tocar. Também gostamos de ouvir essas músicas, mas descobrimos que "Nowhere" era a nossa favorita nesta oferta de catorze músicas. Another album which hasn’t gotten too much attention is Space Between the Drops. It seems to be a compilation album with many tracks that can be found on other releases, but for some reason we noticed the track "Slow Down Time" off of this album. Like so much music that is on Spotify, it does deserve to be listened to and we would suggest trying it out. It captures the Sky Cries Mary sound with all its elements working together to make a pleasant song. We do like the main lyrics which are: The soul of the earth escaped into the sky / Don't be afraid to leave your body behind. Roderick Wolgamott and Anisa Romero take turns making this song special as Michael Cozzi provides some excellent guitar work along with Bennett Ireland supplying his percussion which can be found on so many Sky Cries Mary tracks.
Outro álbum que não recebeu muita atenção foi o Space Between the Drops. Parece um compilado com várias faixas que podem ser encontradas noutros lançamentos mas por algum motivo, notámos a faixa "Slow Down Time" deste álbum, como tantas outras músicas que estão no Spotify, esta merece ser ouvida e sugerimos experimentá-la. Ele captura o som das Sky Cries Mary e todos os seus elementos a trabalharem juntos para fazer uma música boa. Gostamos das letras principais que são: “The soul of the earth escaped into the sky (A alma da terra escapa pelo ceu) / Don't be afraid to leave your body behind. I finished listening to Sky Cries Mary's Secrets of a Red Planet and felt like I traveled back to the 1970s when AOR ruled the radio. The album is mainly a collection of songs that are over 9 minutes in length. All the songs are quite nice with my favorite being "Die of Laughter", but I am not sure if today's younger generation will dig this formidable release which requires a patience that is lacking in today's younger music lovers. It definitely requires a certain mentality that is ready to chill for a listener to truly appreciate all the nuances this release has to offer. I feel like it fits right into the catalog of awesome progressive rock that came out in the 1970s and I hope that will be appreciated in a future world that slows down and takes the time to appreciate the longer songs which used to be the definition of rock music. Secrets from a Red Planet is a wonderful addition to Sky Cries Mary's catalog and I hope that listeners take the time to enjoy it.
Terminei de ouvir Sky Cries Mary’s Secrets of a Red Planet e senti-me como se tivesse viajado de volta à década de 1970, quando a AOR governava a rádio. O álbum é principalmente uma coleção de músicas com mais de nove minutos de duração. Todas as músicas são boas, sendo a minha musica favorita "Die of Laughter", mas não tenho a certeza se a geração mais nova irá gostar deste lançamento formidável que requer uma paciência que falta aos jovens amantes de música. Definitivamente requer uma certa mentalidade que esteja pronta para relaxar para que os ouvintes realmente apreciem todas as nuances que este lançamento tem a oferecer. Sky Cries Mary's latest release is Everything Goes Somewhere and it starts off with three incredibly good songs. The catchiest of the three is "Deli Lotto ATM" which has a hypnotic beat throughout it. Debra Reese's vocals really make this song work as she recites "I pass a Deli Lotto ATM / Can't believe I'll never see you again". The song definitely has a heavier meaning as we walk along the streets with Roderick Wolgamott as he sings about meeting a homeless man, a fearful mother and child and an abandoned dog. After bumping into these characters, he sings, "I've said it before. I love living alone." Despite its catchy nature, the song gives us a feeling of a longing spirit living a life alone, but maybe when he says he loves it, he is not only trying to deceive us, but himself too. An addictive, thoughtful song which merits repeated listening.

O último lançamento dos Sky Cries Mary é Everything Goes Somewhere e começa com três músicas extremamente boas. A mais cativante das três é "Deli Lotto ATM", que tem uma batida hipnótica. After listening to Sky Cries Mary's Thieves and Sirens release, I was left impressed by this hidden gem. In our interview with Sky Cries Mary and Democrash, Rui Garrido lamented the lack of meaningful music being produced nowadays. He mentioned the 60s and 70s and pointed out the anti-war music of the time. Well, the track that got my attention is a response to Rui's wish to hear more meaningful music and it is called "War Song". It really has a good, old hippie feel to it as the vocalists belt out "WAR IS OVER! WAR IS OVER! LAY DOWN YOUR ARMS!" The guitar work keeps this track moving along nicely as it fills the void left by today's world of lollipop music.
Depois de ouvir o lançamento Thieves and Sirens dos Sky Cries Mary, fiquei impressionada com esta joia escondida. Na nossa entrevista com os Sky Cries Mary e os Democrash, Rui Garrido lamentou a falta da música com algum significado hoje em dia. Ele mencionou os anos 60 e 70 e destacou a música anti-war na época. Pois bem o tema que me chamou mais a atenção é uma resposta ao desejo do Rui porque é uma música com significado, que se chama War Song, realmente tem um toque do velho bom hippie enquanto os vocalistas cantam “WAR IS OVER! WAR IS OVER! LAY DOWN YOUR ARMS!” O trabalho do guitarrista também está a matar o tema avançando bem enquanto preenche o vazio deixado pelo mundo atual da música.
Sky Cries Mary prides itself on hypnotic vibes and psychedelic sounds, but after listening to Wandering in the Vastness, whose cover artwork I absolutely love, I found myself going back to the track "Can't Find the Time" for repeated listening. The song really rocks with an aggressive rhythm which is heightened by Roderick Wolgamott's shouted lyrics which work well with Debra Reese's vocals which are powerful at moments when she belts out "I'm so foolish!" but end softly as she sings "I can't find the time" as the song ends with a softness that contrasts with its loud beginning. There are breaks in the song that carries the listener to another world including the 2 minute 30 second mark that has an instrumental that erupts at its end and again as instrumentals carry the song to its end from the 4 minute 19 second mark on. The song seems ready to find a bigger audience as its energy is simply magnetic.
