Tribute band Interview

Cover and tribute bands worldwide are keeping alive music from previous generations.  Due to these bands, new generations of music fans are learning about the great music from the 1960s, 1970s and 1980s.   Coffee Time News had the opportunity to interview Mr. António Carvalho, whose Santana tribute band is the best in the Iberian peninsula.  Read on to learn what makes talented musicians dedicate themselves to legendary music such as Santana.

Boa tarde Sr. António.  Obrigado por estar aqui connosco. 

O meu nome é Constança Pereira e eu tive a oportunidade de entrevistar o Sr. Michael Shrieve, cuja entrevista está no nosso site e no nosso jornal. Eu sou uma grande fã das músicas deles e estou muito feliz de saber que estás a fazer o teu melhor para manter as músicas dos Santana relevantes e populares.  Comigo estão mais pessoas, o Yuri Sundermeyer, O João Teodoro, a Constança Simões e a Mariana Teodoro. 

Nós temos algumas perguntas sobre o teu trabalho de banda tributo. 

A minha primeira pergunta é: “Ainda te lembras da primeira vez que ouviste a música dos Santana?  Qual foi a música e o que te fez sentir?”

 

CONSTANÇA PEREIRA:

Good afternoon Mr. Carvalho.  Thank you for being with us today. 

My name is Constança Pereira and I had the opportunity to interview Mr. Michael Shrieve, whose interview is on our website and also featured in one of our special issues.  I am a big fan of Santana’s work and am happy to know that you are doing your best to maintain Santana’s music relevant and popular.  With me today are Yuri Sundermeyer, João Teodoro, Constança Simöes and Mariana Teodoro. 

We have some questions about your work with your tribute band.  My first question is: Do you still remember the first time you heard Santana’s music?  What was the song and how did it make you feel?

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

Ora para já, vou fazer uma pequena introdução, se me permitem.  Primeiro felicitar-vos pelo vosso trabalho e é com grande orgulho, só vejo gente jovem, isso é muito agradável para mim.  Fico muito contente de ver gente jovem a tratar de assunto de Santana.  Eu não tenho netos, mas tenho filhos.  O meu pai gosta de Santana e tem 89 anos.  Eu gosto de Santana e tenho 64 anos e os meus filhos têm 38 e 34 e gostam de Santana e temos três gerações a gostar e ouvir Santana, e vocês mais novos a fazer perguntas de Santana ainda fico mais contente e voltando à tua pergunta aquela música que me marcou quando criança, o boom deles foi com Woodstock em 1969, eu nasci em 1959, tinha 10 anos estava em Paris. Eu estava a viver com os meus pais e recordo-me disso.  A música que de facto que deu boom foi “Oye Como Va”.  Mas primeiro aquela introdução deles no Woodstock e foi a música que me fez interessar pelos Santana era uma coisa completamente nova.  E depois foi o “Oye Como Va” e o “Black Magic Woman” que me fizeram gostar de Santana.  Não sei se responde à pergunta, mas é isso.

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

First, I’m going to introduce myself, if you’ll allow me to.  First off, I want to congratulate you on your work.  It’s with great pride that I only see young people.  This is very nice for me.  I am very happy to see young people talking about Santana.  I don’t have grandchildren, but I have kids.  My father likes Santana and he is 89 and I like Santana and I’m 64 years old and my sons are 38 and 34 and like Santana.  We have three generations that like and listen to Santana.  You all are younger and are asking questions about Santana which makes me happy.  To answer your question about the music or song that really left a mark on me when I was a kid, well, Santana’s breakthrough came with Woodstock in 1969.  I was born in 1959.  I was ten years old and was in Paris.  I was living with my parents and I remember this.  The song that in fact left a mark was “Oye Como Va”.  But before that there was their first big introduction at Woodstock.  It was that music that got me interested in Santana, because it was something totally different.  And then there was “Oye Como Va” and “Black Magic Woman” that made me like Santana.  I don’t know if that answers the questions, but that’s it.

MARIANA TEODORO:

Sou a Mariana e a minha pergunta é: “Quando é que tu decidiste que querias dedicar os teus talentos a atuar como tributo aos Santana?”

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

Então essa história é engraçada porque é assim, eu já toco guitarra desde pequeno, desde os 15 anos, quer dizer não sou grande coisa, mas faço umas brincadeiras.  E como tocava por aí com alguns amigos, eu apercebi-me que não havia nenhum tributo de Santana em Portugal, havia tributo dos Led Zeppelin, Queen, havia tributo a todos, mas Santana não havia, não sei porquê.  Então eu propus a um colega meu que tocávamos juntos numa banda de cordas.  Então e se nós fizéssemos um tributo a Carlos Santana, eu gosto de Carlos Santana desde criança.  Carlos Santana todos ouvem porque não vamos fazer um tributo a Carlos Santana.  Boa ideia!  Então juntamo-nos com uns amigos e propusemos fazer um tributo a Carlos Santana.  Claro que eu tive algum receio que eles não gostassem porque a maior parte deles são todos músicos profissionais, vivem da música.  Eu não, eu sou engenheiro civil, não vivo só de música, mas levo a música muito a sério.  E então o que é que eu decidi, convidei os a preparar quatro temas e fazermos um numa sessão num estúdio e ver se aquilo funciona ou não.  Se funcionasse continuávamos o projeto, se não funcionasse íamos jantar e ficava tudo bem.  O engraçado é que eles acabaram por gostar destas quatro músicas “Oye Como Va”, “Black Magic Woman”, “Europa” e “Samba Pa Ti”, essas quatro músicas soam muito bem, foi a razão que nós decidimos avançar com o projeto.  Não sei se vocês têm seguido na página no Facebook e do Instagram o Tributo a Carlos Santana nós já damos concertos em casinos, em espetáculos com palcos enormes já com grande som, grande luz e gostámos e é para avançar.  Agora somos o único tributo, o primeiro e único tributo em Portugal e na Península Ibérica.  Porque eu ainda não conheço alguém que toque Carlos Santana.  Quer dizer já vi tocarem, mas uma banda só de tributo o Carlos Santana só existe uma na Alemanha e outra em Inglaterra, que até são umas meninas a tocar nas congas e na percussão. 

 

MARIANA TEODORO:

I’m Mariana and my question is: “When did you decide that you wanted to dedicate your skills to performing in a Santana tribute band?

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

So, that story is funny because I had been playing guitar since I was young, since 15 and I mean I’m not that big of a deal on the guitar, but I do know how to play around on it.  And I played around with some friends when I realized that there were no Santana tribute bands in Portugal.  There were tribute bands for Led Zeppelin, Queen… there was a tribute for everyone, but there wasn’t one for Santana and I don’t know why.  So, I proposed to a colleague that we play together in a band and suggested we formed a Carlos Santana tribute band.  I have liked Santana since I was child. Everyone listened to Carlos Santana, so why not form a tribute band?  Great idea!  So we got together with friends and we proposed forming a Carlos Santana tribute band.  Of course, I had a feeling that they might not like it, because most of them are professional musicians and make a living off of music.  I don’t.  I am a civil engineer and I don’t make a living just off of music, but I do take music very seriously.  And so, what I decided was to invite them to prepare to play four songs and play a session in a studio and see if things would work out or not.  If it worked out, then we would continue the project and if it didn’t work out, we would go have dinner and everything would be all right.  The funny thing is that they ended up liking the four songs: “Oye Como Va”, “Black Magic Woman”, “Europa” and “Samba Pa Ti” and those four songs sounded really good and that was the reason that we decided to move ahead.  I don’t know if you have been following us on our Carlos Santana Tribute Band Facebook and Instagram pages.  We have already performed at casinos and shows with big stages with great sound and great lighting and we love it and we are going to continue.  Right now we are the only Santana tribute band… the one and only tribute band in Portugal and on the Iberian peninsula, because I still don’t know anyone who plays Carlos Santana.  Well, I mean, I’ve already seen other Carlos Santana tribute bands, but there is only one in Germany and another in England and that one is only some women who play congas and percussion.  

 

CONSTANÇA SIMÕES:

Sou a Constança, “Já falaste com algum membro da banda Santana?  Já recebeste alguma opinião deles sobre as vossas versões das músicas deles?

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

A única coisa que eu recebi de resposta do Santana e dos elementos foi mensagem via Facebook o Santana respondeu um email numa das páginas que tenho… uma coisa muito simples.  Eu disse-lhes que tinha um tributo.  E ele não desenvolveu muito porque provavelmente não me conhece muito bem.  O Greg Rolle, o teclista já respondeu a algumas coisas e já trocamos umas impressões e eles sabem que existe deste tributo.  Não há grande coisa.  Nem nos conhecem muito porque estamos nisto há dois anos, não há grande coisa, mas pelos vídeos dá para perceber que isto é sério.  E espero que eles estejam orgulhosos do que estamos a fazer. 

 

CONSTANÇA SIMÕES:

I’m Constança… “Have you spoken with any member of Santana?  Have you ever gotten any feedback from them about your work covering their music?

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

The only response that I got from Santana and the other members was a message by Facebook where Santana did respond to one of my emails… it was a really simple message.  I told them that I had a tribute band.  He didn’t care too much, probably because they didn’t know me very well.  Actually, the keyboardist Greg Rolle did respond to some of my messages and we exchanged ideas and they do know about my tribute band, but it’s not a big deal. We barely know each other, because we have only been doing this for two years, so it’s not that big of a deal, but with our videos you can tell that we are serious and I hope that they are proud of us.    

 

JOÃO TEODORO:

Sou o João, “A tua banda é completamente fiel á música dos Santana ou vocês dão o vosso toque nas músicas?”

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

Não, não… não, não, nós não damos toque nenhum o que nós escolhemos foi não vamos escolher temas de estúdio.  Vamos escolher temas ao vivo de espetáculos ao vivo e fizemos as mesmas acentuações, os tempos estão tudo igual ao Carlos Santana.  O que escolhemos foi um concerto para cada um dos temas, mas não alteramos nada, fazemos exatamente o que lá está mas nas versões ao vivo.  Somos fiéis aos sons, aos tempos, às mudanças, às acentuações, está lá tudo feito a rigor.  Temos isto tudo escrito, alias sempre que é preciso um substituto, nos últimos espetáculos foi preciso, porque o nosso percussionista que é o Paulo Reis não estava, fomos arranjar um substituto que é o Ruca Rebordão que é profissional, conhecido no mundo tudo e temos tudo escrito e saiu exatamente como nós queríamos, portanto não inventamos nada e não há nada para inventar.  Nós tentamos fazer exatamente o que eles fazem, porque não é fácil.  Eu até me entendo bem com o fraseado do Santana na guitarra, eu sei mais ou menos, então o próprio som característico é do Santana.  Tive a preocupação de o ir buscar os pedais e a guitarra é um PRS também, é uma guitarra semelhante à dele.  O que nós fazemos é exatamente o que está no tema que nós escolhemos.   

 

JOÃO TEODORO:

I’m João.  Is your band completely faithful to Santana’s music or do you put your own touches on the music?

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

No, no, no, no, we don’t change anything.  What we chose was not to go with their studio releases.  We have always chosen live performances and albums and we play them with the same tone, the same timing… everything is the same as Carlos Santana.  We chose a live performance for each of the songs, but we didn’t change anything.  We did it exactly as it was done in the original live versions.  We are faithful to the sounds, the timing and the tones of the songs.  It’s all there and done with precision. 

We have all this written, as a matter of fact, whenever we need a replacement, like in the last show, we needed one, because our percussionist, who is Paulo Reis, wasn’t there and we got a replacement, who is Ruca Rebordão, who is a professional and known around the world and we have everything written and with him it turned out exactly how we wanted it to, therefor we don’t make anything up and there’s nothing to be made up and we try to do exactly what Santana does, which isn’t easy.  I understand well how Santana plays the guitar.  I took the time to go get the right pedals and a PRS guitar which is similar to Carlos Santana’s.  What we do is perform the songs that we pick exactly as Santana performed them. 

  

CONSTANÇA PEREIRA:

Tu sabes tocar todas as músicas dos Santana?  Se não, qual seria uma música que gostasses de aprender?

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

Nós não podemos tocar todas, como deves calcular.  O tempo dos concertos é no máximo duas horas, ninguém nos autoriza a tocar mais de duas horas, e duas horas são vinte músicas.  E as vinte músicas dos Santana toco as todas, portanto não há nenhuma destas importantes que eu não saiba tocar.  Mas provavelmente ainda há aqui o “Jingo”, por exemplo, “Jingo” é uma das temas que não está na lista e que eu provavelmente gostaria de tocar, mas não há tempo nem espaço. 

Fizemos aqui uma coisa eu não sei se a sua pergunta vai por esse caminho também.  Nós tocamos aqui dois temas, um é da Michelle Branch que também tem um tema chamado “The Game of Love”, ela canta isto.  Também temos do Steven Tyler.  Então, não é só o Santana, também as outras canções que eles também participaram e os convidados deles.  É evidente que também Wayne Shorter, um dos convidados, que é um saxofonista já falecido. 

Nós temos por acaso um saxofonista, que é o Naná Sousa Dias, um grande saxofonista conhecido internacionalmente, que conhecia Wayne Shorter pessoalmente, aliás a esposa de Wayne Shorter era portuguesa.  De vez em quando nos nossos concertos temos um saxofonista.

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

We can’t play all the songs as you can understand.  Our concerts are a maximum of two hours.  Nobody asks us to play more than two hours and two hours ends up being twenty songs.  And the twenty most important Santana songs, well, I play them all, so there aren’t any important songs that I don’t know how to play.  But probably there are still a few like “Jingo”… “Jingo” is one of the songs that is not on the list and that I would probably like to play, but there isn’t the time or space on the setlist. 

I’m not sure if it fits into your question, but I want to mention that we also play two songs that are collaborations.  One is by Michelle Branch called “The Game of Love” and she sings on it.  Also, there is a song with Steven Tyler, so it’s not just Santana; it’s also the other songs they have participated in and Santana’s songs with guest artists.   There is also Wayne Shorter, who worked with Carlos Santana, who is a saxophone player who has already passed away.

We have, by chance, a saxophone player named Naná Sousa Dias, a great internationally-known saxophone player, who personally knew Wayne Shorter.  As a matter of fact, Wayne Shorter’s wife was actually Portuguese.  Sometimes our shows will feature a saxophone player.

 

MARIANA TEODORO:

Se quisesses converter alguém para ser fã dos Santana, qual música recomendavas?

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

As principais músicas que todos iam gostar, como “Oye Como Va”, “Samba Pa Ti”, “Europa”, “Black Magic Woman”, foram todas um grande sucesso.  São músicas para todas as pessoas ouviram, porque muitos jovens não conhecem, pois raramente essas músicas passam na rádio.  Agora já existe mais temas a passar na rádio, por exemplo o Smooth e o Corazon Espinado, são músicas que até existe arranjo de DJs, o que transformar as músicas e leva os mais novos a conhece-las. 

 

MARIANA TEODORO:

If you wanted to convert someone into being a Santana fan, which song would you recommend? 

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO

I would choose their biggest hits which everybody loves like “Oye Como Va”, “Samba Pa Ti”, “Europa”, “Black Magic Woman”.  All of them were hits.  They are songs that anyone can listen to, because many young people don’t know them, because the songs barely get played on the radio.  Now, there are more songs that get played on the radio, for example “Smooth” and “Corazon Espinado”, they are songs that have even been remixed by DJs, which transformed the songs and made it so younger people learned about their music. 

 

YURI SUNDERMEYER:

Para alguém que já é familiar com o rock e com algumas músicas dos Santana, qual música subvalorizada tu sugerias para essas pessoas ouvirem?

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

Isso é logo o tema de abertura o Soul Sacrifice para o pessoal do rock fazer barulho, nós fazemos barulho assírio com esse tema, é mesmo com a força toda, eles iriam gostar de certeza.  Outra também No One To Depend On é outro tema que o pessoal do rock gosta.  Santana não é só rock, mas existem dois ou três temas que são só rock, por exemplo Evil Ways é um dos temas que o pessoal do rock gostaria de ouvir, penso eu. 

 

YURI SUNDERMEYER:

For someone who is already familiar with rock music and with Santana, what is a song that is overlooked by many that you would suggest that they listen to?

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

I would say “Soul Sacrifice”, because it’s for rockers to make noise.  We make serious noise with this song.  It really hits full force.  I think they will like it a lot.  Another song is “No One To Depend On”, which is another that rockers really like.  Santana is not only rock, but there are two or three songs that are simply rock songs, for example “Evil Ways” is one of the songs that rockers enjoy listening to in my opinion.

 

CONSTANÇA SIMÕES:

Você acha que já tornou algumas pessoas fas da banda Santana com o vosso trabalho?

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

Sim, claro.  Havia muita gente que não ouvia Santana e passar a ouvir Santana.  Em Portugal existe um fenómeno engraçado, deixar-se de ouvir Santana por muito tempo, e desde que nós aparecemos apareceram também muitos vídeos de pessoas a tocar temas de Santana no YouTube em guitarra, não todas os temas, apenas os mais conhecidos, para também apareceram no YouTube.  Isso tudo é bom, quanto mais gente houver a tocar Santana melhor.  Melhor para os Santana, melhor para nós.    

 

CONSTANÇA SIMÕES:

Do you think that your cover band has helped turn people into Santana fans?

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

Yes, of course.  There have been a lot of people that had never listened to Santana and now they do because of us.   In Portugal there is a funny phenomenon, people had quit listening to Santana for a long time, but since our band appeared a lot of videos of people playing the most famous Santana songs on their guitars have appeared on YouTube.  All of that is good, the more people who are playing Santana the better.  It is better for Santana and better for us. 

 

JOÃO TEODORO:
Muitas músicas dos Santana são instrumentais, tu gostas de tocar essas músicas?

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

Gosto.  Existe muitas músicas o Europa, o Samba Pa Ti, o Soul Sacrifice são exemplos de músicas instrumentais.  Eu também não conhecia bem os Santana, o que eu conhecia era o que toda a gente conhecia que são os temas mais conhecidos o Oye Como Va, Black Magic Woman e outras.  Mas depois foi ver temas tipo Guajira que não é rock, é mais salsa, é um tema que está um quatro por quatro, mas depois passa para seis por oito, passa para salsa, entra a parte rítmica muito forte com congas e outros instrumentos de percussão e fica muito forte.  Eu desconhecia isto dos Santana, desconhecia a Salsa, desconhecia uma série de coisas do Santana.  Estar a escutar as coisas de Santana agarrou-me imenso.  Sempre que tocamos Santana, adoramos!  Sempre que acabamos os concertos ficamos sempre contentes, claro que nenhum de nós era fã de Santana, toda a gente conhecia Santana, mas não tocavam Santana, nem foi estudado profundamente, mas gostei e estou a adorar.  

 

JOÃO TEODORO:

Many of Santana’s songs are instrumentals.  Do you like to play these kinds of songs? 

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

Yes, I do.  There are a lot of songs like “Europa”, “Samba Pa Ti”, “Soul Sacrifice” which are examples of instrumental songs.  I also didn’t know Santana’s music well and what I knew was what everyone knew which are the best known songs like “Oye Como Va”, “Black Magic Woman” and others.   But then it was seen other songs like “Guajira” which isn’t rock, it’s more like salsa, which is a song that is 4 by 4, but later goes into a 6 by 8, goes into salsa, going into a rhythmic part that is really strong with congas and other percussion and gets really strong.  I hadn’t known about that side of Santana, his salsa and other things about his music.  It really grabbed me, all these lesser known things about Santana, that I have been listening to.  Whenever we play Santana, we love it.  Whenever we finish a concert, we are always happy. None of us were Santana fans before, but obviously we knew the music, but hadn’t played it or studied it deeply, but we like it now and are loving it.    

 

CONSTANÇA PEREIRA:

Nós entrevistamos o Michael Shrieve, o aclamado baterista dos Santana.  O vosso baterista já falou sobre ele no trabalho?   Tu tens algumas opiniões sobre o trabalho dele (do Michael Shrieve)?

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:  Michael Shrieve é um grande baterista.  Foi uma presença muito forte na banda dos Santana, passaram lá mais, até a Cindy, que é a esposa do Carlos Santana toca bateria, é muito boa baterista e faz também um excelente trabalho.  Dennis Chambers para mim é um baterista completo e a nossa baterista é fã do Dennis Chambers. 

 

CONSTANÇA PEREIRA:

We interviewed Michael Shrieve, the renowned drummer of Santana.  Has your drummer talked about Michael Shrieve and his work?  Do you have any opinions about Shrieve’s work?

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

Michael Shrieve is a great drummer.  He had a strong presence in Santana.  There have been other drummers who have come after Michael Shrieve including Cindy, who is Carlos Santana’s wife, and she is a good drummer and does excellent work.  Dennis Chambers, for me, is a complete drummer, and our drummer is a fan of Dennis Chambers.

CONSTANÇA SIMÕES:

Carlos Santana é conhecido por ter opiniões políticas.  Você gosta quando a música se torna política ou prefere que seja mais divertida? 

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

O Carlos Santana tem lá o pensamento dele, ninguém pode contestar, alias num dos concertos por causa de ser homem e mulher, vocês provavelmente já ouviram falar fez algumas escolhas que não acho que seja boa para ela.   As questões políticas cada um leva como quer.  Mas como somos um tributo as questões políticas têm a ver com ele.  Nós estamos aqui para fazer um tributo ao Santana.  Nós não temos que ir atrás dessas coisas.  Eu penso de maneira diferente e todos nós podemos, é a forma de ver o mundo, uma forma de ele o ver.  Nós temos do lado dele na música ao resto é responsabilidade dele.  Acho muito bem ele intervir publicamente. 

 

CONSTANÇA SIMÕES:

Carlos Santana is known for having political opinions.  Do you like it when music turns political or do you prefer that it stays on the lighter side?

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

Carlos Santana has his own way of thinking and no one can say anything about that.  In fact, at one of his concerts he commented on gender issues… you probably already heard about it.  He made some choices that I don’t think were good for him.  With the political stuff, each one takes it the way they want to.  But we are a tribute band and his political opinions are his own.  We’re here to pay tribute to Santana.  We don’t have to follow after his political thoughts.  I think in a different way and everyone of us can and that’s his way of viewing the world.  We are on his side musically, but the rest is up to him.  I think it’s fine that he publicly takes part in the discussion. 

 

MARIANA TEODORO:

Quantos CDs ou LPs do Santana você tem?  Tem um CD ou LP favorito?

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

É assim… aquele que mais, digamos que mais me impressiona é Supernatural.  Supernatural para mim é o lançamento mais forte.   Caravanserai também, Abraxas que foi dos primeiros e o Moonflower foi um período muito cool deles.  O Supernatural eu acho que é o álbum, para mim, que faz toda a diferença no mundo.  Santana I, Santana III também foram bons, mas o Supernatural é o melhor e foi um álbum que ganhou um Grammy.   Não estamos a falar de um guitarrista qualquer.  Para quem diz que ele é, ele não é, ele ganhou dez Grammys.  Guitarristas que dizem isso é uma falta de respeito, não sei como alguns guitarristas conseguem dizer isso.  Temos que mostrar algum respeito.

MARIANA TEODORO:
How many Santana CDs or LPs do you have?  Have you got a favorite?

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

It’s like this… the album that impresses me the most is Supernatural.  It’s their strongest release.  Also, Caravanserai… Abraxas was one of their first and Moonflower was a cool period for them.  Supernatural is the album that makes all the difference in the world.  Santana 1, Santana 3 also are good.  It’s an album that won a Grammy Award.  As a matter of fact, he has ten Grammys.  We’re not talking about just any guitarist.  Although some guitarists say that Santana is very simplistic or basic, because it’s just pentatonic scales.  It’s not really like that.  And when someone has won ten Grammy Awards, you have to respect that.  I don’t know how those guitarists can think that way.  I think that’s disrespectful.  You have to show respect.     

 

CONSTANÇA PEREIRA:

O que você mais gosta quanto atua ao vivo?  Quanto contacto tem com os fans?

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

Ah sim, já vieram pedir algumas assinaturas, pediram algumas assinaturas, pediram-me uma palheta tipo um superstar… eu não sou nada dessas coisas, eu gosto quando eles aparecem é uma forma de mostrar que fizemos é o trabalho certo, percebes?  Veem falar comigo e agradecer e aplaudir e dar elogios tudo isso é importante para a banda.  Provavelmente existem pessoas que não gostam, também aparecem muitos guitarristas bons nos nossos concertos.  Obviamente, quando me ouvirem tocar com certeza não seria o melhor guitarrista, mas isso temos pena é o que era. 

 

CONSTANCA PEREIRA:

What do you like most when you play live?  How much contact do you have with the fans?

 

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:

Oh, yes!  Some have come and asked for my autograph.  Some ask me for a guitar pick like I am some kind of superstar.  I’m not anything like that.  I like when the fans show up because it shows we’re doing our jobs right.  When they come and talk with me, applaud at the shows and complement our work.  It’s all important to us.  There are probably some people who don’t like the music.  At our concerts, there are guitarists who show up and some are very good.  Obviously when they hear me play… well, for sure I’m not the best of guitarists, but it’s a pity because it is what it is.

"Black Magic Woman" é uma música muito, muito boa.  Tem dois movimentos: uma parte instrumental e uma parte cantada.  Tem também uma parte de distorção e rítmica muito forte.  Muito bem escolhido.

"Oye Como Va"

"Oye Como Va" é um clássico, é o tipo de música que faz o pessoal cantar, nessa música eles cantam conosco.  É onde o publico mais participar.

Não faz parte do nosso alinhamento, mas brevemente estará lá.  Tem um instrumental muito forte.

No "Toussaint L’Overture" normalmente fosse umas misturas, especialmente com o "Soul Sacrifice" e outras, também tem um instrumental bastante intenso.

Caravanaserai é um clássico um penso que seja de 1972, que é ainda com a formação original dos primeiros músicos.  Caravanaserai é um grande álbum.

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:  "Black Magic Woman" is really, really good.  It has two parts; an instrumental part and a part with vocals.  There is also a part with distortion and a strong rhythm.  It’s a nice choice.

ANTÓNIO CARVALHO:  "Oye Como Va" is a classic and is one of the songs that people sing along with us on and really take part in the song.  Good pick!

It’s not part of our playlist, but it’ll soon be there.  The instrumentals on it are particularly strong.
