MARIANA LOPES: How was it setting up your first band? What were the biggest problems at that point of your career?
VANESSA COLLIER: You just got all the good questions. So, the biggest thing at the beginning is you’re often playing for no money. You don’t get paid and so finding musicians that will believe in you is really difficult. I went through a whole thing with that… a whole challenge with that. That song “Don’t Come Easy” is kind of about that. Money is always a big one at the beginning. Traveling, figuring out how to cover all the costs… that’s a big deal and finding the right people. You can make music with great musicians, but they’re not always great to tour with, so finding the right people that are great musicians and good people to be around.
MARIANA LOPES: Como foi formar a sua primeira banda? Quais foram os maiores problemas da sua carreira nessa altura?
VANESSA COLLIER: Tu ficaste com todas as boas perguntas. Então, no início, o maior contratempo é que muitas vezes se toca gratuitamente. Não recebes dinheiro e encontrar músicos que acreditem em ti é mesmo difícil. Eu passei por muita coisa… foi um grande desafio. Aquela música “Don’t Come Easy” foi inspirada nisso. Dinheiro é sempre um grande problema no início. Viajar, descobrir uma maneira de pagar as despesas… isso é mesmo importante e, também, arranjar as pessoas certas. Podes criar música com ótimos músicos, mas eles nem sempre são ótimos para digressões, então precisas de encontrar as pessoas certas, que sejam bons músicos, e também boas pessoas.

Vanessa Collier and her drummer, Andrew D. McNeill, made a big impression on both Yuri and Mariana, who were ready to sign up with the band and hit the road with them.
MARIANA LOPES: Is there any difference between how a man and a woman approach the saxophone?
VANESSA COLLIER: I don’t think so. I think if you close your eyes and you listen, you can’t tell if someone is male or female, but I think a lot of people look with their eyes first, so my approach is often because I’ve had to struggle in the music industry a little bit more than I think some of my colleagues have, so I kind of play that way. There’s a little bit of an edge to how I play and approach things just because there’s a purpose and determination.
MARIANA LOPES: Há alguma diferença entre como uma mulher ou como um homem toca saxofone?
VANESSA COLLIER: Eu acho que não, acho que se tu fechares os olhos não consegues ver nenhuma diferença entre um homem e uma mulher. Mas eu acho que muita gente olha primeiro com os olhos! A minha perspetiva baseia-se principalmente nisso porque já lutei na indústria da música um bocadinho mais do que os meus colegas, acho que desde sempre toco assim. Há um bocadinho de intensidade na maneira como eu toco e na maneira como interpreto as coisas porque há propósito e determinação.
MARIANA LOPES: Who is the most famous person you have collaborated with?
VANESSA COLLIER: That’s a good question. I played on stage with Buddy Guy. That’s probably the most well-known. I got to sit with him a couple of times actually.
MARIANA LOPES: Quem é a pessoa mais famosa com quem você já colaborou?
VANESSA COLLIER: Essa é uma boa pergunta. Toquei num palco com o Buddy Guy. Ele é provavelmente o mais conhecido. Na verdade, consegui tocar ao vivo com ele algumas vezes.
MARIANA LOPES: If your dreams could come true, who is the person you would most want to collaborate with?
VANESSA COLLIER: Great question. I think Trombone Shorty. I love him, so, yeah. Or Bonnie Raitt or both.
MARIANA LOPES: Se os seus sonhos pudessem tornar-se realidade, qual é a pessoa com quem mais gostaria de colaborar?
VANESSA COLLIER: Ótima questão. Acho que com o Trombone Shorty. Eu adoro-o, por isso, sim ou Bonnie Raitt ou os dois.

Vanessa Collier has a beautiful and powerful voice and our Mariana took lots of notes from her while interviewing her. We are waiting for them to do a duet one day.
MARIANA LOPES: Concerning your vocals, did you realize on your own you had a good singing voice or did someone else tell you that you should take your singing more seriously?
VANESSA COLLIER: Another great question. So, I think at some point, really what it was was I was on the road and I would play ten or eleven shows in a row and then I would have no voice and I was like, “This is not normal.” So, my singing technique isn’t correct, right? So, I started taking lessons with this amazing vocal coach out of Nashville and I’ve been taking lessons with her since 2020 and I don’t go hoarse. Now I know how to fix problems. I know how to save my voice, so I can do eleven shows in a row if I have to and still be able to talk and sing normally.
MARIANA LOPES: Acerca da sua voz, você percebeu sozinha que tinha uma voz muito boa, ou outra pessoa disse-lhe que devia levar a música mais a sério?
VANESSA COLLIER: Outra boa pergunta. Penso que, por um lado, realmente o que aconteceu, foi quando eu estava em digressão e tocava dez ou onze concertos seguidos. Depois disso não tinha voz e começava a pensar que, “Isto não é normal.” Talvez a minha técnica de cantar não estivesse correta, certo? Por isso, comecei a ter aulas com este professor de voz fantástico, que é de Nashville. Eu estou a ter aulas com ele desde 2020 e já não fico rouca. Agora eu sei resolver problemas. Eu sei como hei-de proteger a minha voz, então eu consigo fazer onze concertos seguidos e ainda consigo cantar normalmente.
MARIANA LOPES: Are you fashion conscious? Do you keep up with fashion? Is fashion a part of your stage show?
VANESSA COLLIER: Great question. I think in some ways, yes, I am very conscious on show day. I don’t wear this stuff (jeans and a T-shirt). I definitely slip on the heels, put on my leather pants and a nice blouse or shirt, but I’m not necessarily dressing for the fashion. It’s more what makes me comfortable and feel strong on stage and able to perform the best that I can.
MARIANA LOPES: É consciente da moda? Acompanha a moda? A moda é parte do espetáculo no palco?
VANESSA COLLIER: Excelente questão. Acho que de alguma forma sim. Sou muito consciente no dia do espetáculo. Eu não visto isto (calcas de ganga ou T-shirt)! Normalmente, uso saltos altos, as minhas calças de couro e uma blusa ou uma camisa gira, mas não me visto necessariamente para a moda. Visto o que me deixa confortável e confiante no palco, para ser capaz de fazer a melhor atuação que conseguir.
MARIANA LOPES: We noticed your favorite shoes which you wear on stage and on the album cover. Do you want to tell us the story behind the shoes and what brand they are?
VANESSA COLLIER: I’ve worn them pretty much every gig since I started. They were originally Franco Sartos, but I’ve had them remade a couple of times, because they don’t survive more than a year or a year and a half.
MARIANA LOPES: Nós reparamos nos seus sapatos favoritos que usa no palco e na capa do álbum. Pode contar-nos a história por trás dos sapatos e de qual marca são?
VANESSA COLLIER: Eu utilizo-os em quase todos os concertos, desde que comecei. Eles são originalmente de Franco Sartos, mas tive de os arranjar algumas vezes, porque não sobrevivem mais do que um ano ou um ano e meio.

MARIANA LOPES: As a woman, do you ever find people don’t take you seriously enough?
VANESSA COLLIER: Oh, absolutely yes. When I first started, I was kind of pushed off into a corner and kind of disregarded at jam sessions. You just kind of learn to take up space and hold your own, but absolutely you are treated differently.
MARIANA LOPES: Como mulher, alguma vez já reparou em alguém que não a leve suficientemente a sério?
VANESSA COLLIER: Oh, com certeza! Quando eu comecei, fui mais ou menos empurrada para o meu canto e fui desconsiderada nas sessões. Tu só aprendes a manter o teu espaço e a ficar de pé, mas és sempre tratada de forma diferente.
MARIANA LOPES: What is your approach for dealing with rude sexist behavior which is inappropriate? Do you have a certain approach or solution for that?
VANESSA COLLIER: I think it depends on the situation. Oftentimes I will ignore it and I won’t pay it any attention, because most of the time it doesn’t affect me. It’s not within my group, so it’s not within my control. If it is an interview question that is inappropriate and I know it would not be asked of a man, then maybe I’ll address it in that instance, but for the most part I speak through my music and my message is in the music. If someone misses that point, it’s kind of on them. It’s not my job to inform them of my viewpoint of the world.
MARIANA LOPES: Qual é a sua abordagem para lidar com comportamentos sexistas inapropriados. Há alguma solução para isso?
VANESSA COLLIER: Acho que depende muito da situação. A maior parte das vezes ignoro e não me importo, porque na maioria das vezes não me afeta. Não está no meu grupo, então não está sob o meu controlo. Se for uma pergunta de entrevista que é inapropriada e eu sei que não seria feita a um homem, nesse caso talvez me atinja um pouco. Mas, na maioria das vezes, falo através das minhas músicas, as mensagens estão nas minhas músicas. Se alguém não entende esse ponto, o problema não é meu. Não é o meu trabalho informar os outros sobre o meu ponto de vista do mundo.
MARIANA LOPES: How do you balance your professional life and your private life?
VANESSA COLLIER: I’m constantly trying to balance it. I’m the tour manager on tour, so I’m booking all the flights and making sure everyone’s getting where they are going. Plus, I have to be an artist and write the music and all that. You know, I have to have time to breathe too, so I try to find little moments throughout the day. Yesterday, I got an ice cream cone and sat by the water for half an hour and that was a beautiful rebalancing for me. I often find time away from people is how I balance.
MARIANA LOPES: Como é que consegue equilibrar a sua vida privada com a sua vida como figura publica?
VANESSA COLLIER: Estou constantemente a tentar compatibilizar as duas. Sou a diretora da Tour, logo, sou a responsável por reservar todos os voos e a ter a certeza que todos chegam ao seu destino. E mais, tenho de ser uma artista e escrever as músicas e esse tipo de coisas. Percebes? Tenho de ter tempo para respirar também, por isso tento encontrar pequenos momentos durante o dia. Ontem comi um gelado e sentei-me perto do rio durante meia hora e foi algo que me estabilizou. Penso que arranjar tempo longe das outras pessoas é uma boa forma de manter esse equilíbrio.

MARIANA LOPES: How do you recruit new band members? Do you have a system or is each member a unique story? Can I join your band?
VANESSA COLLIER: Absolutely! Come on! Let’s do it! I would love it. So, normally I either get word of mouth or see people on the road or meet people on the road like you and there’s something special about them and you just invite them to learn the tunes and play a show and see how it goes. That’s pretty much it. If it works, it works.
MARIANA LOPES: Como é que você recruta novos membros para a banda? Tem algum sistema ou cada membro tem uma história única? Eu posso juntar-me à sua banda?
VANESSA COLLIER: Absolutamente! Anda! Vamos fazer isso! Eu iria adorar. Normalmente, ou ouço por aí ou vejo pessoas na rua. Conheço pessoas na rua, gosto delas, há algo de especial sobre elas e simplemente convido-as para aprender as músicas e tocar num concerto, para ver como corre. É basicamente isso! Se funcionar, funciona.
